Weight Loss Plateau? Let’s Break Through It!
When you first start your weight loss journey, the weight seems to just melt off. This is because when you remove calories, your body uses stored glycogen for energy. This leads to the scale going down aka, weight loss. After a few weeks, you hit a wall where the scale doesn’t budge as much. This is what we call a weight loss plateau but the good news is that it’s relatively easy to solve!
Breaking through a plateau requires you to be honest with yourself. Have you been a little lax when it comes to food? Eating a few extra bites or adding more creamer to your coffee? Check in with yourself on those behaviors. When you hit a plateau, it’s important to remember why you started your weight loss journey to begin with. Take a few minutes to journal why you started and you should feel reenergized in no time!
Once you’ve checked on your nutrition, let’s talk about movement! Maybe it’s time to start working out or just getting some movement in during the day. It can start as easily as a 20-30 minute walk, yoga, or bodyweight workouts. It doesn’t have to be over the top to be effective! Start with 1-2 days a week and then see how it goes.
When you start working out, you may notice a reduction in stress, which can also lead to weight loss. Stress can cause inflammation as well as our body to hold onto fat mass. While negating all stress isn’t possible, you may want to keep a record of your daily stress levels and see how working out can impact them. Your nutrition also plays a huge role in reducing inflammation so consider adding in salmon, turmeric, leafy greens, veggies, and fruits! Fun fact, one time during the holidays, I was feeling stressed with having more alcohol than usual, our travel schedule, and different foods, so I asked my husband if we could stop for a green juice. I never crave them so I thought this was odd. Wouldn’t you know within 5 minutes of drinking the juice and getting in micronutrients that my attitude was completely gone?! Nutrition matters, folks!
