Sustainable Nutrition: Shopping In Season

I don’t know about you but sometimes, I feel disconnected from my food. I mean that in terms of how it’s grown, how it gets to where I’m buying it, and sometimes what season it’s meant to be in. Think about it, our world is very on-demand. We can have someone deliver almost any cuisine to us and we can get someone to do our grocery shopping as well as deliver it to our doorstep. To become more sustainable as a person and business owner, I’m committing to eating in-season produce in 2024. Not only is it good for the environment, but it’s also amazing for your body!

Flavor + Nutrition = Body-loving Benefits

Have you tried a blueberry in the summer versus in the winter? The summer berry is sweet and bursting with flavor, whereas the winter blueberry is super tart and unenjoyable. In-season produce bursts with flavor, owing to its optimal ripeness and shorter time from farm to table.

But it's not just about taste; seasonal fruits and vegetables also pack a nutritional punch. Studies have shown that produce harvested at its peak tends to retain more nutrients, providing us with a higher concentration of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants essential for our well-being. By aligning our diets with the seasons, we ensure that our bodies receive a diverse array of nutrients year-round. You can also freeze produce to preserve its nutrients so that it doesn’t go to waste!

Supporting Local Farmers and Communities

Opting for local produce isn't just about what's on our plates; it's about fostering thriving communities and sustainable food systems. When we buy from local farmers, we support their livelihoods and contribute to the vitality of rural economies. By choosing locally sourced foods, we reduce the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation and support sustainable agricultural practices.

Moreover, building relationships with local farmers fosters a deeper connection to our food and the land it comes from. Knowing where our food comes from and the people who grow it imbues each meal with a sense of authenticity and appreciation. A quick Google search is all you need to find local farms!

Eating in season and choosing local produce is a powerful step towards reducing our eco-footprint. Seasonal eating encourages biodiversity, as farmers cultivate a variety of crops suited to the local climate and soil conditions. This diversity not only enhances the resilience of agricultural systems but also supports the health of bees and other organisms essential for ecosystem balance.

Furthermore, by reducing the distance food travels from farm to fork, we decrease greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation and refrigeration. Embracing seasonal, local produce is a simple yet impactful way to tread lightly on the planet and contribute to a more sustainable future for generations to come.
