Waves of Love: Caring for Your Nutrition is an Act of Self-Love

Continuing on our theme of love, we’re going to talk about how properly caring for your nutrition is an act of self-love, which then enables you to be your best self for others. I’ve witnessed this firsthand in myself and my clients.

Some of you may or may not know that I am an eating disorder survivor. I checked myself into an outpatient treatment facility when I couldn’t stand the pain anymore. I saw what it was doing to my loved ones and friends as well. I was short with them, moody, and unbearable. Your brain is very different when you’re not eating!

When you undereat, you may feel fatigued, get sick more easily, see negative changes in your skin, and experience symptoms of depression. Like Snickers said, “You’re not you when you’re hungry!” No one wants to feel like this, nor should they feel that way. The sad thing is that people become so accustomed to the symptoms of undereating that they don’t know how good they can really feel.

In my clients, I’ve seen brain fog disappear, relationships strengthen, moods improve, and confidence soar. It’s not always about body composition changes, though those are pretty awesome, it’s also about becoming the best version of yourself. When you have the energy to care for yourself, it radiates out and makes other people feel good. Then they think about taking of themselves and now they’re influencing their circle! All because you decided to take care of your nutrition.

When you’re nourished, anxiety and stress become manageable (if you have serious issues, please seek appropriate help) and things you once believed were impossible are not achievable. My clients have felt so fueled because they were eating to support their activities that they ran half marathons, competed in local CrossFit competitions, and more!

So how are we defining nourished? You’re eating enough calories each day to sustain your activity levels. You prioritize consuming various whole foods like veggies, fruit, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. You incorporate your favorite treats in moderation without restrictive rules and guilt. You experience flexibility in your food choices because you recognize that food comes down to carbs, fats, and protein. Keep indulgences in moderation in proportion to YOUR goals and you’ll be ok.
