Summer Flat: Staying in Surf Shape with no Waves

If you live in South Florida, you know this time of year as the “summer flat” aka, the ocean is like bath water. It can be devastating for any surfer but I believe we can make the best of any situation. Here are 4 ways we can stay in surfing shape while we wait for the next wave to come.

  1. Balance board! I highly recommend investing in one of these bad boys. My husband bought me a Rev Brand for my birthday last year and I absolutely love it. It’s helped me improve my balance and awareness of the pressure on my feet. Not only has it made me a better surfer, it’s helped me to become a better lifter as well!

  2. Strength and Conditioning. Now is the time to increase your strength in upper body pushing and pulling. These are important aspects for getting you into the lineup, paddling for waves and having the endurance to get back out there after you catch wave after wave.

  3. Mobility. If you have issues popping up, sometimes it’s a mobility issue. Improving internal and external hip rotation is key for being able to pop up and get into a good stance once you’re on your feet. My go-to is the 90/90 hip switch.

  4. Skate. A surf skate is a really fun board that mimics the feeling of surfing on land. You can practice your turns. Hit up your local surf shop to find out which board is right for you and get out there!
