Surfing the Grocery Aisles: How to Grocery Shop like a Pro
Whether you’ve been on your health journey for a while or you’re just starting out, grocery shopping can be a bit daunting. There’s a lot of conflicting information out there that can make it even more challenging, so let’s talk about a few tips to make healthy grocery shopping easier.
Shop Seasonal Produce - buying in season packs a nutrient punch since produce is at its ripest. Not to mention they tend to be less expensive since they don’t travel that far.
Choose Foods You Actually Like - Listen, I started eating kale because some fitness girls told me to and it was gross at first. I ended up liking it once I understood how to work with it, but my point is that you should buy foods you’ll eat! Just because it’s labeled a “superfood” doesn’t mean you need to eat it if you don’t like the taste and texture. Try it a few times if you want, but part of sustainable nutrition is finding healthy foods you actually enjoy.
Look at the Ingredients—When you’re looking at ingredient lists, we want them to be limited and made of mostly pronounceable ingredients. There are a few times when companies will use different names for salt, such as sodium lactate, so do a little research and don’t overthink it.
Shop With Your Goals in Mind — There are certain seasons when treats are part of my grocery list and times when they aren’t, such as leading up to a competition. So focus on the goal you have in mind. If you know that having treats in the house will cause you to overindulge or make you uncomfortable, don’t put them on your list. Instead, make it a special occasion to go out for said treat!
