Surfing and Nutrition: Conditions Aren’t Always Ideal

Maybe you’ve seen surfers looking at the waves for a long time before paddling out. They’re looking at the conditions and choosing the best place to paddle out, if they go out at all. Sometimes the conditions aren’t conducive to surfing like the waves are flat, disorganized, and unridable. Much like the surfers strategize how to make the best of the conditions, we need to make the best of our life conditions when it comes to nutrition.

We won’t always be able to have easily discernable macros when a loved one cooks for us. We may need to be a little resourceful and bring extra snacks when we travel. This is a time to be like surfers and figure out how to make the best of our conditions. If a loved one is making a meal for you, you may want to leave a little wiggle room in your macros if staying close to your totals is important. You may want to pack some extra protein bars or jerky because you know it’s hard to hit your protein goal when you’re traveling.

As much as we want to catch the perfect wave or have the perfect arrangements for our nutrition and fitness, we won’t always have that. That’s life! This is why being resourceful and understanding how to navigate situations to stick to your nutrition goals is super important. It makes you appreciate the times when things flow smoothly even more.
